I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? It’s not good for people who work outdoors, or who have asthma or damaged lungs. On the whole, people do not value them.

There are owls in New York City. Big owls: Barred Owls on Riverside Drive and down the path from Harlem Meer, a Great Horned Owl in Central Park’s Ramble. The NYC owls have little to do with the book in front of me except that it too is about birds and people. But–is that it?

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. Coming down from the emotional high we noticed our grumbling stomachs: time to eat. All bird and animal pictures are Brad’s. I am not a fan of American restaurants.

The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here. It was completely unharmed as the hunter had climbed a tree to catch it, so we agreed to purchase the poor animal and after taking a few images and ensuring the hunter was gone, we released it and with mixed emotions watched as it climbed high into a massive tree.

They are all wonderful people and they are all animal lovers. But I’ve learned we love animals in very different ways. I have a dog, cats (domestic and feral), birds raccoons, hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, bunnies and mice…they all share the yard and the woods. ” My sister said, “Sounds like a plan to me.
