And when Foer writes that he approves of farms that treat their animals the way we treat pet dogs, that's his real message. Once your priority is justice, your message isn't "eating animals".

In fact, a whole lot of semi-vegans can do much more for animals than the tiny number of people who are willing to give up all animal products and scrupulously read labels. Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for.

In the past I have attributed some of this conflict to differences between the conservation mindset and that of animal rights/animal welfare. Dogs should not be used to hunt foxes. I still think that distinction is important, but it isn’t sufficient to explain what is going on here.

99% of the commentary I have seen has been angry bordering on outright hostile, the few exceptions mostly being the kind of right wing “news” sites that love nothing more than tweaking a tree-hugging liberal like myself. It may even have been mentioned in Google+, although it is unlikely anyone noticed. You do a lot of good.
