Normally, I’d take my standard (and lightweight) 8s, plus a scope. During a week in Costa Rica, I used it only twice.

While exploring Flagstaff, I found a pair of these birds nesting near the Flagstaff Medical Center in a patch of forest. Truly, a must see species in North America. The birds never called while I watched, unlike the noisy Acorn Woodpeckers nearby — an unusually quiet woodpecker species.

She was tired, thin, and had several medical issues. The very excited response was that she had been banded as a fledgling in 1983, which made her, at 27 years and 9 months of age, the second oldest living wild Red-tailed hawk ever recovered in all of North America. to find out her actual age. This filled me with both glee and dismay.
