I didn’t know what species of woodpecker it was, but I knew it was just in the clearing on the other side of the road. Before I delve into some of these avian treasures let me give you a few non-birding reasons to visit this gem of South America. If your Spanish or Portuguese is at the level of a 2-year-old bonobo like mine is, then you’ll probably be pleased to know that Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America.

Rufous-winged Woodpecker. A serious world mega and even more so because this species is truly scarce and without a doubt, truly endangered. Another endangered species, this lovely snow-white bird with the yellow bill needs rainforest adjacent to mangroves in southern Costa Rica and adjacent western Panama.

I have been a fan of the Kaufman Guides since I bought the Field Guide to Butterflies of North America , for a birds and butterflies trip to Colorado. It was Massachusetts Representative John Weeks who sponsored and fought for the 1911 Weeks Act, which authorized the use of federal funds for the purchase of forest lands for conservation.
