They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

At any rate there are three species, the Black Skimmer (which isn’t that much blacker than the others) which is found in the Americas, the Indian Skimmer, which is the most vulnerable member of the family, and the African Skimmer, which is widespread but nowhere common in Africa. One is even skimming. Euphorbias at sundown.

Well-travelled birders will recognise Cattle Egrets following the steps of hippo or African Buffalo , and Black-crowned Night Herons , but more African species occur in the form of the massive Goliath Heron , the smaller Squacco Heron , and the highly distinctive Black Egret , famous for creating a canopy with its wings to hunt small fish.

Assuming you have a passing interest in wildlife, or at the least you know someone that does, and chances are in the last week or so you’ve become aware that some lady from America shot a lion. I’ve certainly seen the story plenty in my Facebook news feed, and were I more of a Twitter user I am sure I would have seen it there too.
