The countryside too is full of signature European species like European Bee-eaters, European Rollers and Great-spotted Cuckoos … Within a shortish drive of the lodge is an unusual birding spot called Pulo do Lobo or The wolf’s Leap. This is worthwhile to pick up some rocky terrain species and the scenery is stunning.

By age 2 she could identify over 10 species of birds in our Johannesburg, South Africa, yard by call alone. There are quite a few to choose from but some of the better ones include “ Happy Feet “, a film about Emperor Penguins, and “Hoot&# , a great story about saving Burrowing Owls in Florida.

Where did the Coney Island Gray-hooded Gull come from, Africa or South America? In this book, rare birds are species “for which, on average, only 5 or fewer individuals have been found annually in North America since around 1950.” Rare Birds of North America covers 265 species within these parameters. And, not very often.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. Southern Cassowary with chicks by Duncan Wright Carlos Sanchez was particularly appreciative of a new bird for him in Florida. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida.
