Baby Spotted Dikkop Mervyn van Rooyen in South Africa experienced the wonder of a wee thick-knee in a way very few of us ever will. A very special experience!! He actually didn’t like to be alone and even made friends with the cat who would sit with him for hours.

I had seen Thick-Knees in South Africa, but I was very excited to see this species, which is the only member of its family found in Central America. We may have been wrong.

As we looked closer, we saw the Sooty Terns nesting right on the ground itself, calling back and forth to each other as they sat on their speckled eggs. Of the ten students, two had gone on the trip the year before and one had experience with the Sooty Terns, meaning 30% of us knew what we were doing, and 70% had zero idea.

I new him because we enlisted his Dryfus Lion and one of his tigers to carry out experiments with bones (this is something archaeologists do).

They also migrate to and from the High Arctic, crossing the Atlantic to Europe, but they keep going, down across the Mediterranean into Africa. This tiny passerine winters in Africa, places like Tanzania, Nigeria, Somalia. In my experience here, the Wheatear arrive at the end of May to early June and quickly establish territories.

We have a selection of books that we have found over the years in bookshops and one of our favourites was published in 1949 and is The Birds of South Africa by Dr Austin Roberts. We have never been to South Africa, but it is a lovely book to look at and dream! Read about them here but also get out and experience them.

It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. Red Junglefowl by Mike Bergin Clare Kines chose an egg as his Best Bird of the Year. I wrote about the experience here. Adam Riley chose a bird that is near and dear to Mike Bergin’s heart.
