They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). to the far reaches of freezing Siberia.

Long before that time Mexican domesticated Turkeys had been adopted by Native Americans in the American Southwest as well. The trip was probably reasonably well planned and it would have been known to these travelers that game birds, as well as deer and fish, were abundant in the region they were traveling to.

This boldness isn’t restricted to exchanges with other grouse, either: in some locales, members of this circumpolar family are astonishingly foolhardy around humans. But there’s at least one night on the Scottish calendar when the grouse enjoys a reprieve, at least from human appetites.

Animals in the tri-state area are euthanized daily, rescue groups are unable to save as many lives as they wish, and animals spend years in boarding kennels while awaiting adopters to fall in love with them. But perhaps their human passed away, or maybe they fell on hard times and just couldn’t afford pet care any longer.
