The top-5 birds of 2018

What qualifies a bird to be included in the top-5? My first criterion was that I observed it only once during the year 2018. This version extended the list a bit and it turned out that almost every fourth bird was an one-monther. Somewhat unfairly, the second criterion was that I described the observation at 10,000 Birds.

Queens County Bird Club 2018 Big Sit Results

I had high hopes for the 5th Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit this past Saturday at Fort Tilden. As I placed my gear and sipped my coffee I was pleased to hear a Blue Jay call, an odd first bird for the count. A new bird for the Big Sit and a clue that the day was going to be good.

The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
