Best Bird of the Year 2014

10,000 Birds

2014 has been a good year for us at 10,000 Birds. Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. That’s Redgannet’s BBOTY at the top of the post.

The slaughter tourism trade in Serbia

10,000 Birds

As we speak, in Serbia these birds are still hunted in August and September. Turtle Doves have been declining in Europe since the 1970s, and in this century alone, the continent has lost 40% of its population of the species. Since this spring’s revision of the European Red List, the Turtle Dove is listed as a vulnerable species.

The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days.

Are You Going to the 2015 Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival?

10,000 Birds

I had a great time back in 2012 and even more fun in 2014. Florida is a great place to bird in January because in addition to the year-round species there are a host of birds that winter in the relatively balmy climate that Florida has in winter. Get my Florida list to 180 species. Who knows what great birds 2015 will bring?

Great Gray Owl: Seeing the Ghost

10,000 Birds

Though hardly common, Great Gray sightings are a yearly occurrence in Western Montana, and it is one of the twelve species of owl known to breed in the state. We arrived at Maclay Flat just in time to see three men unloading the sort of heavy-duty optics and camera equipment that signals serious birders on the hunt.
