Best Bird of the Year 2014

2014 has been a good year for us at 10,000 Birds. Larry starts us off right with an owl that makes birders drool: I was able to see and photograph many great birds in 2014 but my Best Bird of the Year would have to be the Great Gray Owl , the largest Strix in North America. That’s Redgannet’s BBOTY at the top of the post.

Tricolored Blackbird in Trouble in California

The Results of the 2014 Tricolored Blackbird Statewide Survey confirm that this species is in rapid decline. ” Blackbirds, among other species, are also killed every year for consuming sunflower seeds mostly in Minnesota and the Dakotas. New Year’s Day 2014. With binoculars around my neck, I am leaving home, wondering which will be the first species on my year list. By contrast, the wild Rock Pigeon, Columba livia livia , is an ill-numbered species that I have seen only a few times, in mountain gorges or Mediterranean islands, further away from villages.

Amazing Alcids at Shinnecock Inlet

And it had been awhile: my last visit there was in 2014!) To have a chance to see two species close up without vomiting was something I was looking forward to! This game of hide-and-seek played out for awhile until the elusive bird dove and didn’t come up anywhere I could find it.
