I started keeping year lists – not just blogging about them but really keeping track of what I see each year – as late as 2012, roughly 30 years into my birding career. Therefore, I greatly expanded the structure of my year list in 2013 to include maps, statistics and a diary. What was left? The blogging element.

I enjoy collecting children’s books about birds and nature that I come across in the expected (book stores) and unexpected (academic library conference reports) places. Here are three excellent but very different children’s books I enjoyed this year (two were published in 2013, one in 2011). The birds thrive.

Regardless of what may have been my motivation, all eagles are exceptionally amazing birds that will scarcely ever fail to impress lucky birders. There are now a few isolated pairs in Germany’s North-West again, in Rheinland-Pfalz and also in Bavaria.

I am no different from other birders that keep a year list and while my 511 species in 2013 wasn’t an absurdly good year it also wasn’t half-bad. I even had a plan to make sure that my first bird of the year would be a good one. Short-eared Owl is a great way to start off a birding year! Amazingly, it worked!

The weather in Karratha was very hot during our visit with daytime temperatures of 38c (100f) and the predominant birds in the township were Little Corella , Crested Pigeons and Silver Gulls. Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas.

In both May and September there are a lot of trees without leaves and that can be quite advantageous if you are birding. Both Crimson Rosellas and Australian King Parrots stood out easily and many other birds did too! We then walked back to the train station and back to Katoomba to the walk back to our accommodation.

But no, Jim’s eyes only light up when I talk about the Red-tailed Hawk that observes feeder birds from the top of the pine tree behind our building, or the Northern Harriers that in fall kettle over that grasslands preserve. Sometimes, I’ll reply with a story about the sparrows found in a local grasslands preserve.
