I can’t even imagine being in a position where my government was telling me to kill my dog, or have it beaten to death. Dog owners in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, are even being told to kill their own dogs, or else their dogs will be beaten to death by the police and the owners will be charged a fine. When I was asked if I wanted to read Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS (Rodale 2009) I was ambivalent. And managing means killing them, breeding them, and otherwise fiddling with their populations. I know he's a conservationist, therefore I know he will advocate for "managing" the "resources" that are sentient nonhumans.

With regard to cruelty and suffering, it's clear from the film that the human animal has been profoundly negatively affected by climate change, but there is no attention given to nonhuman animals.

Today, there are more than 3,000 birds at this accessible colony and they are protected by fences and stiff fines for human disturbance. In recent years on two subsequent December nights, this single leopard killed 65 penguins, only feasting on a small percentage of the carcasses. In 2009 the population was recorded as 20,699 pairs.
