Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience. Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds. The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled.

I do not (yet) have any accessibility issues, and my only experience regarding anything akin to accessibility has been limited to the period when my daughter was in a stroller, which presents only a tiny sliver of the challenges faced by many. The refuge has an impressive visitor center that opened in 2008, so it is ADA compliant.

The closer one raises her head, than lies back. Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory. The other two are motionless.

Islands, for various reasons, experience more extinctions than continents (with Africa being the only continent not suffering a bird extinction!). As you can imagine, I was champing at the bit to get to this lost paradise and when I finally obtained the necessary permissions in 2008, it didn’t fail to astonish!

The ugly truth is that this stuff doesn’t usually go public in any big way, but the birding record is filled with references to sketchy sightings, lists that are looked upon with raised eyebrows, and even a few cases of outright fraud. We are not immune. What happens if you get caught. It’s your reputation.

There were an estimated 13,000 breeding pairs and roosting birds in 2016; additional islands have been created to support the increasing population and a raised (17-feet) walkway with observation platforms allows birders and photographers to enjoy them. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. It was amazing.
