Despite the fact that efforts are made to ensure they are not imprinted on humans, they are naturally confiding, even friendly. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience. Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds.

Islands, for various reasons, experience more extinctions than continents (with Africa being the only continent not suffering a bird extinction!). Previously common at its only known site, Lake Aloatra, into the 1930’s, the introduction of numerous exotic fish species and human disturbance led to massive population declines.

The closer one raises her head, than lies back. Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory. The other two are motionless.

They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. There were an estimated 13,000 breeding pairs and roosting birds in 2016; additional islands have been created to support the increasing population and a raised (17-feet) walkway with observation platforms allows birders and photographers to enjoy them. It was amazing.

I was fortunate to have been born and raised in Africa, and although I have traveled extensively around the world, it remains my home and in my blood. Birding here is a joy, further augmented by the world’s most intact mammalian megafuana, fascinating tribal cultures, breath-taking scenery and the cradle of human history.

None fly, most are curious and social, which probably contributes to our cultural perception of penguins as one step away from human. Raised in the Galapagos, she’s been exposed to penguins her whole life. There is also a great deal of biological and ecological information encapsulated within De Roy’s experiences.
