A pair of screeching Blacksmith Lapwings was flying around as six Burchell’s Zebras were quenching their thirst, suspiciously observing surroundings every now and then. Asia: Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! The other two are motionless.

In Singapore, Common Redshanks mostly drink Tiger Beer. If on the other hand you take a zebra, shrink it and attach wings, the punishment may be similar, but the result will not be a Zebra Dove. I agree that the throat is white. They despise Chardonnay, as anyone (except Spotted Redshanks) should.

Javan Mynas , Olive-backed Sunbirds , Spotted Doves , Rock Doves , Zebra Doves , Common Tailorbirds , Blue-tailed Bee-eaters , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Pink-necked Green Pigeons , House Sparrows and Black-naped Orioles were in that location. We also observed Tiger Shrike in this area, Common Iora and Oriental Magpie-Robin. Brown Shrike.

But my long wait to see antelope, zebras and everything in between is finally over. In Hawaii I stood on a beach as albatrosses fledged and Tiger Sharks prowled for the less successful ones. As has been the case every time I’ve been to Africa before, I won’t be there just for play.

Mosethla Bush Camp guide awaits us by the open Land Rover and with a loaded rifle in front of the steering wheel, we continue into the bush (oddly, while observing lions and tigers in India, not a single rifle was in sight). The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus.

They are one of the four existing species in the genus Panthera , and with males weighing in at up to 550lbs are second in size only to Tigers. This lioness remained hidden from these zebras in the long grass until she felt they were close enough for the charge.
