Black-and-white Warblers are usually dapper little birds, with their head-to-tail zebra stripes. Suddenly I saw a ground squirrel creeping up on the Bunting. Leaving the squirrel to feed on the very same grass stalk. But this one had just bathed, and had not yet combed its hair. BUM-bum, BUM-bum!

Recent studies in Sri Lanka have revealed that, upon sighting a predator, a drongo will imitate the alarm calls of at least 4 other bird species (babblers, laughing thrushes, bulbuls, and others), as well as the call given by the specific predator, i.e. a giant squirrel or eagle.

Zebra Doves , Tree Sparrows , Pacific Swallows , Pink-necked Pigeons , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Asian Koel , Spotted Dove , Rock Dove , Red Junglefowl , Oriental White Eyes and Black-naped Orioles were soon on our list. It is also a good location for observing otters, squirrels and monitors.

There were wild boars and monitors rustling through the leaves as well as the plantain squirrels that we had become so accustomed to. We were surprised that it had taken until this day to find Coconut Lorikeets. We had not expected to see too many bird species on this short walk, but sometimes these short walks can have a surprise or two.
