The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. 31 to provide inviolate sanctuary for migratory birds. The refuge is already open to migratory bird hunting, upland game hunting, and sport fishing.

Secrets of the Swamps

A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

Melbourne to Beaumaris along the coast

As I continued south I stopped at each small jetty to see which species were roosting and the sea was substantially rougher than on my previous visit. There are a lot of small sheltered bays along the coast and you can choose to walk along the beach or promenade. Black-winged Stilt at St Kilda. Feeding frenzy.
