So what do these facts mean for our wildlife? While larger animals like deer and elk are usually able to escape the fire’s path, smaller animals like squirrels, foxes and snakes are not always so lucky. Fire can also cause wildlife to be burned, dehydrated and malnourished. Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires.

Ferruginous Hawks were known as Rusty Squirrel-Hawks back in the 1800′s and they exist in both a light and dark morph. They are often seen on the ground since their prey consists mainly of rabbit, prairie dog and, you guessed it, ground squirrel. Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species.

It was advisable to remove them at night, to keep them calm, to establish immediately a feeding board on which they would be fed chopped beef and egg to start, then fresh birds, rabbit or squirrel. Again, Cade led with solid evidence acquired through his own research. And grow they did.

Birders who submit their checklists to eBird likely know that their data may be used to conduct research on avian migration, range, or population. It has also been used by researchers from other fields, such as economists. I emailed the Dr. Lopez and asked about this research and the use of eBird data. A: Good question!

After a pleasant morning with ducks, crisp snow and sunshine, we followed the wildlife trail on our way out. Our internet research showed that somebody in Pine County had all three ( Black, Brown-capped, and Gray-crowned ) Rosy Finches on the feeders in their garden. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list.
