These dogs were rescued by Chinese activists before they could be slaughtered for meat. According to this article from the NPR site , such rescues are occuring more regularly as dogs are increasingly becoming pets. A good story from China for once.

Stanwood is right near where we live in Seattle and, sadly, home to Pigs Peace Animal Sanctuary which rescues all kinds of animals. I can only imagine how they feel. From the Sky Valley Chronicle. In " Prominent Horseman Faces Questions About Neglect ," Joe Drape of the New York Times reports: Four undernourished and neglected former racehorses belonging to Ernie Paragallo, a prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and owner, were rescued from a New York kill pen last month, one step from being slaughtered.

I prefer "anti-unnecessary slaughter of sentient nonhumans" and it has nothing to do with perceived modernity. Bea directed me to an interview with Dr. Elizabeth Parker , the "chair man " (my emphasis) of the Animal Agriculture Alliance at CattleNetwork, which apparently is "The Source for Cattle News." The HSUS isn't even anti-hunting !

The animals were still bred and raised for slaughter, but evidently in some kind of soulful way we don't really hear about. Essentially, industrialized farming=soulless, small family farm=soulful.

People whose careers involve creating, fattening, transporting and slaughtering sentient nonhumans whose parts and secretions will then be used as food are having some financial difficulties. Why the rescue plan? Along with the rest of the country. The market has spoken; this is supposed to be capitalism, not corporate socialism.
