We would walk the Pacific Beach promenade, see Shamu at Sea World (this is before Blackfish, mind you), and sample delicious Mexican food in Old Town San Diego. Riding around Mission Bay and back to the headquarters along the San Diego River can garner us about sixty-five species over the 10-mile bike ride.

As for the music, while listening to some sample tracks, I found myself enjoying the blend of bird sounds and easy-going music.

Read what you want about the origin of domestic cats; the genetic evidence is not properly sampled. I once knew a guy who kept and raised cats. Also, feral Cats on islands seem to be a serious problem, causing the extirpation of some indigenous species. They are invasive species. But they don’t live in North America.

Unlike other bird races where participants keep tight-lipped about bird species as mundane as a House Sparrow , this event gives a prize to the team that helps the most. But isn’t all of that data sharing counterproductive for a bird race where the team with the most species wins? This is a Masked Shrike.

The Moustached Kingfisher was known by only three samples– one female “collected” in the 1920’s, the other two females “collected” in the 1950’s, according to an Audubon Magazine article. The justification was ridiculously laughable: in order to further study the species. How it raised its chicks? Who its predators were?

” Writing about owls means writing about roughly 250 species (I counted 245 on the 2022 Clements spreadsheet, but I might have missed a few, and we all know that each classification system is different). These are behaviors that are most likely to vary across species and topics that make for compelling stories.
