Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. The grand old bird became a surrogate mother, and raised them herself. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

A pet cat raising orphaned ducklings! Explanations are simple: only a mother rabbit or a highly trained rehabilitator has a chance of raising and releasing a healthy wild bunny. Teach her to do the right thing, even if it makes her a little sad, because help without knowledge is no help at all.

As the cadet tells the camera, “I’m relieved … but I’m kinda sad, too, I just got to know him,” a hawk enters, stage left, grabs the mouse, and exits, stage right. “No!” My heart goes out to the cadet (the hawk is probably awfully fond of him right now, too). cries the cadet. “He He didn’t even last five minutes!”.

We hope this is the right decision – only time will tell! Predators that rely on lemmings, like the Snowy Owl , took advantage of the bounty and had great breeding success, raising large broods which, after the lemming population crashes, dispersed far and wide. Last summer saw lemmings at a high point in their population cycles.

Whilst catfish have around 100,000 taste buds, rabbits around 17,000 and humans approximately 9,000, birds rarely exceed 100 of these receptors. Aptly called the tube-nosed birds, on account of their raised and highly visible nostrils, these species are able to hone in on oceanic food from several miles away, based on smell alone.
