Agonizing quandaries concerning invasive species are well-known to wildlife biologists. The relevant numbers involving cats, the people that cherish them, and the birds (and small mammals and reptiles) that they kill are all too large to mean much; you might as well use the funny word “gazillions.”

New England Reptile Distributers just released a video explaining a terrible incident involving the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). FWC officers arrived at a reptile facility and forcefully killed 29 reticulated pythons, 5 Burmese pythons, and 1 pregnant Boa constrictor.

People walk in and hand you a box, which you know will contain the wildlife and some bizarre food item. He had a big heart!”.

But, as I have already shown in one of my two posts about visiting Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, that is exactly what the boat load of birders I was with got the chance to see way back at the beginning of March. It is not every day that one gets to see a pair of Green Iguanas sunning themselves on a bush from close range.

An abstract from a recent paper in Nature : Anthropogenic threats, such as collisions with man-made structures, vehicles, poisoning and predation by domestic pets, combine to kill billions of wildlife annually. Un-owned cats, as opposed to owned pets, cause the majority of this mortality.
