But I have to admit that seeing some of the wolves, foxes, asses, and sheep of Dulan county is nice, at least as long as they do not stand in front of some exciting birds. Blue Sheep. At least they are cute. No nice blue flowers. Moupin Pika. Gazelle, maybe Goitered ? Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background.

It was an unexpected bird tour, without too much planning and aimed at a few target species, of which we saw most, but the main one eluded us… Early morning, leaving the last houses behind… and a Little Owl awaits us on a traffic sign. Despite the rainy forecast, the weather was pleasantly tropical: sun, a short shower and more sun.

For 3-4 days, opt for the hills, Tresnjica Griffon Vulture Sanctuary and the nearby Tara Mountain National Park with 140 species (not too much, but with Hazel Grouse , Ural , Pygmy and Tengmalm’s Owls , White-backed and Three-toed Woodpeckers among them). Long-eared Owls of Kikinda. Great Bustard Sanctuary. Deliblato Sands Reserve.

There is an aquarium, Cat Canyon display of local wild felines, and a Wild Desert Bighorn Sheep area. They have a Raptor Free Flight demonstration, with Harris Hawks, Great Horned Owls, Barn owls , and Ravens , as well as reptile hall, and so much more, that the advice we got was spot on. We will be back often! 2 House Sparrow.

I wondered, last August, how animals endure it — the tiny ever-pumping lungs of hummingbirds, the lungs of bighorn sheep shouldering their way up mountains, they must get filled with smoke too, right? Sometimes, ash actually drifts down from the sky like a dusting of snow. But on the whole, I know that the fire is a good thing.

For many years they were persecuted by farmers for preying on sheep, but in fact they will indeed do just that if they can. My friend Alice was very happy to see her first Kea, but this one was channeling the bored look of an owl. That bill isn’t just for nuts. Kea are pretty loud. Hint – do not feed Kea.
