There are owls in New York City. Big owls: Barred Owls on Riverside Drive and down the path from Harlem Meer, a Great Horned Owl in Central Park’s Ramble. The NYC owls have little to do with the book in front of me except that it too is about birds and people. But–is that it?

Owls and eagles and ducks and hummingbirds and parrots and woodpeckers are all things that a regular nonbirding joe or jane can, with time and a few color photographs, see the appeal of. If you would kindly ignore the fact that it eats putrid, bloating seals, it’s adorable. For that matter, what about the Ross’s Gull ?

So that’s why it’s awesome that webcams sponsored by Audubon and explore.org are providing a close-up peek into Arctic Tern nests on Seal Island along Maine’s coast. Some of those once-popular breeding spots now produce no chicks at all. A few chicks have already hatched, and more are due any day now.

It was our second trip out on this piece of highway this year and sadly the second deceased Barn Owl. Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. Grass Owls are also present in the area, but remain off our bird list.

Would Barred Owls chuckle and admit that, for the record, “No, we really aren’t saying ‘Who cooks for you’?” Would those polar counterparts laugh over similar life situations (“You also like 3 day old seal blubber?”), There would also be drama! Tubenoses suck!”).

Certainly, boxed wine has none of the rarefied cachet of its bottled cousins: there’s no lovingly hand-pasted label, the anticipation in prying a cork from the bottle for the first time since it was sealed at the vineyard, or the aesthetic appeal of the red wine sloshing out from its dark emerald glass enclosure.
