I’m sure quite a number just keep on going through the tropical night sky, find their way to woods in Nicaragua or further north but a good number do indeed stop in Costa Rica, go birding there now and you will see them. The same goes for Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and other places along their migration routes.

There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. The subpopulation in northern Costa Rica and southern Nicaragua numbered 834 individuals in 2009, but was estimated at less than 200 individuals, equating to c. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

While pondering how we could get more views into those fish shops and wondering if we could a better angle for scanning the flat roofs of Puntarenas, a bird casually flew just past us, right on the shore near the busy ferry. Might a few occur appear in Costa Rica during migration?

Some stop right in front of our place in the urbanized intermontane valley where the majority of Costa Ricans reside. Our big month of bird movements in Costa Rica, the 10th month of the year, is when most of the swallows, Scarlet Tanagers , thrushes, and other species on the South American express push through.

It occurred right in the area where I expected a Harpy Eagle to be seen, in part of an extensive, little explored forest complex connected to the Indio Maiz Reserve, a large, extremely important area of lowland rainforest in Nicaragua that still hosts a population of the large eagles.
