This shelter has hundreds of dogs and cats coming and going on a daily basis and need our help!

That did not stop a New Jersey animal shelter from publishing this rabble-rousing flyer on Facebook, all written in alarming red capital letters: PARK RANGERS AND VET OFFICES ARE PUTTING OUT WARNINGS. THIS YEAR THE HAWKS REALLY SEEM TO BE OUT IN FORCE OFF THE EAST COAST.

Such migration hotspots include the famed Magee Marsh area in Ohio, Point Pelee in southern Ontario, Cape May, New Jersey, and what might be the best area, sites on the Texas coast. Whatever the reason may be, we do know that Las Brisas provides a lot of food and shelter for Cerulean Warblers as they migrate south.

We might not get the variety of a New Jersey autumn but we do get major numbers of species that winter in South America. In doing so, they have provided food and shelter for thousands of migrant birds along with habitat for hundreds of resident birds and other players in the local Talamanca rainforest ecosystem.

New Jersey is Undecided. New Jersey has an interesting approach, at the sate level. If left unchecked, free-roaming cats will breed and their populations increase at locations where they find suitable shelter and food, resulting in environmental/property damage, and public nuisance. Mole hills!

I was glad I had my spotting scope with me and that I had practice spotting ‘Buffies’ from hours of searching sod fields in Long Island and New Jersey. Many birders left at the first drops, but I crowded with a few other birders under the shelter of the volunteer kiosk.
