It is now something that the wood-rails themselves knew all along- there never was a Gray-necked Wood-Rail that lived from Mexico south to the Amazon. The ones in Costa Rica are now known as “ Lesser Violetear ” and if you have seen Green Violetear here and in Mexico, it means that you can add another bird species to your list.

There are two main wetland areas in Costa Rica, one in the Tempisque River floodplain, and the other in wetland areas associated with Lake Nicaragua. I know, big deal for folks from much of Canada, the USA, and Mexico, but for local birders, this big bird with a pouch is a major twitch (it was a country tick for each of us).

I’m quite fond of the Black-headed Siskin , a tropical finch found from Mexico to Nicaragua. Of course, it wouldn’t be October in central Mexico without a collection of different hummingbirds. Several females would show up further on. The bird at the top, and in the second photo, is a scruffy-looking adolescent.

The first words describing this species in Wikipedia are “poorly-documented” Before 2015, when I first saw it in Paso Ancho, it had only been reported twice on eBird outside of its Sierra Madre Occidental breeding range: once from Taxco, Mexico, and another report from Nicaragua. For a bird that is only hours from starving to death at any given time, it is no small feat to traverse the 500 miles across the Gulf of Mexico! Found in Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua, this tiny hummingbird is placed within its own genus microchera. hummers on earth. Coming in at no. 19 is the celestial Red-tailed Comet.
