The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. KING says one of the Nisqually casualties was a Steller sea lion, protected under the Endangered Species Act. Investigators say they do not know who is responsible.

Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?) Annex II of the Bern Convention lists 45 of Beljarica’s bird species, with a further 91 species in Annex III.

Or maybe something closer to home like the American Bird Conservancy or a wildlife rescue organization like the Marine Mammal Center or International Bird Rescue. It puts our ecologically valuable wildlife at risk and disrespects the men and women charged with protecting our natural resources.

I want him (I am not a sexist – simply, have never met a lady guide, although I have some among my FB friends) to know mammals and trees, too, but also local history and who and when made that hilltop citadel that we drove by. He suffered from the lack of experience as a traveler and someone who has hired guides himself.

The first thing I learned was that most animal-plant interaction did not involve mammals, or even birds. Aromatic plants in bird nests as a protection against blood-sucking flying insects? I remember taking an advanced seminar in plant-animal interaction, in preparation for my own study of human-plant interactions. Insects ruled.

No, to me the saddest part of this whole situation is that the National Audubon Society has been missing in action for years on what is one of the most crucial conservation challenges facing our native birds, mammals, and herps. Pretty standard. He also quoted a biologist pointing out how extreme the TNR people are and gave a few examples.

If you like animals you will generally not want them to suffer and you won’t want them to go extinct. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans. Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population.
