With the exception of species that number in the hundreds, conservation biologists are not as concerned with the fates of individual animals, it is only when such fates of many individuals are added up do they begin to worry.

What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.

The initial solution was translocation, but there were a limited amount of islands on which you could place species without mammals being a problem, and they were only very small islands.

Where the Kingfishers Are

The third species I saw was an Atherton endemic (of which there are a few knocking about) Macleay’s Honeyeater , a striking spotted honeyeater that was easy to watch on the bird baths near the dining area. I’ve been a fan of this particular peculiar Australian mammal my entire life, and more than any bird I wanted to see it here.

As most people know cats, both feral and domestic, have a pretty big impact on wild birds and other wildlife, and the effect of mammals is particularly profound in New Zealand. Even wiping out a majority of mammals from the third biggest island is a challenge, and not just logistically.

Lake Eacham, Mt Hypipamee and Mount Molloy

In the parking area I immediately encountered a pair of Australian Brush-turkeys as well as a new species for me, a Grey-headed Robin. This huge member of the Australian robin family is really tame in this carpark, making it probably the easiest place n the world to see the species (other than the Tableland it is only found in New Guinea).
