Agonizing quandaries concerning invasive species are well-known to wildlife biologists. The relevant numbers involving cats, the people that cherish them, and the birds (and small mammals and reptiles) that they kill are all too large to mean much; you might as well use the funny word “gazillions.”

It’s a wonder wildlife rehabilitators have any hair left by the end of the summer, as we’ve been so busy tearing it out over people who have found a baby bird and tried to help by squirting milk down his throat or stuffing him with bread. Call a wildlife rehabilitator! Even wild mammals – fawns, squirrels, bunnies, etc.

New England Reptile Distributers just released a video explaining a terrible incident involving the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). So what should have happened is: the FWC should have given Coffee the deadline extension, and allowed him to rehome the remaining pets within whatever timeframe was needed.

The rodents eat the bait, stagger out of the building looking for water, and are easy prey for whatever carnivore happens to be passing by, be it wildlife or someone’s pet. This means not only can they continue poisoning kids, pets, and wildlife for years while the case drags through court, but now they have a monopoly on the market.

Wildlife rehabilitators are a multi-tasking lot. Not only do we take care of zillions of injured and orphaned birds/mammals/reptiles/whatever, we also have to deal with and educate the public. People walk in and hand you a box, which you know will contain the wildlife and some bizarre food item. He had a big heart!”.
