A furtive peek to the smaller part of the pond at the right hand side, some fishes are twirling at the very surface, showing off their flanks for the moment, then their backs… some strange fishes. Because they aren’t fishes, but – Eurasian Otters! My first live otters ever (the only previous one was a road-kill)!

Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?) Yet, the primary job of Beljarica is not to support eagles and otters, but to control the floods.

Serbia has a right-centre Government that for years avoided protecting any of the already proposed areas, heavily pushing the development at whatever cost and miserably failing the environment. It is a spacious floodplain between the River Danube and the levee, 2.1 mi at its widest point and some 9 km2 / 3.5 Golden Jackals in Beljarica.

Finally, of the at least 20 species of mammals present here, the otter, the jackal, and the wildcat certainly deserve a mention. Fortunately, late June is the right season for the locally brewed snake-cold Vergina lager in the deepest shade by some gull-filled beach.

That is the trickiest moment for him: what if there’s a bear right next to the dirt track? In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them.

A Wood Stork lands in a tree, while one Neotropical River Otter swims across and climbs a floating log. Into the souvenir shop for some local coffee, chocolate and cocoa, then a coffee mug with an image of a Three-toed Sloth and the Field Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica, and off we go. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.)

I don’t mind that they share the world with other creatures, and I have even developed an appreciation for mammals, reptiles and amphibians – but only so long as watching them doesn’t collide with my finding birds. Examples are wolf, beaver, otter, domestic cat, wolverine, wild boar, elk (moose), and reindeer.
