Over the last weekend, my wife and I made a whirl-wind trip from Mexico, up to the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle area, where we stayed with the in-laws. They have a nice large back yard, complete with a variety of bird feeders, and a fence that backs right up to a Green Belt.

I knew for sure I hadn’t seen a Great Blue yet this year, but the heron on the can of this week’s beer – Universale Pale Ale by Fremont Brewing of Seattle, Washington – reminded me just how long it’s been. Fremont Brewing is located in Fremont, a neighborhood of Seattle and formerly an independent city.

Molly Hashimoto is an illustrator, birder, and teacher (she teaches plein air watercolor painting and printmaking at nature institutes near her native Seattle), and in Birds of the West: An Artist’s Guide she masterfully brings all skills into play. The index lists bird species by whole name, which is less than satisfactory.

It is also a month when the Law of Diminishing Returns over-took itself. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. Seattle–Terminal 91. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds.
