This is common with life-threatening situations and expected; any ancient ancestors who would have not paid heed to close calls would have likely been quickly and savagely selected from the gene pool (just trying to pet the Short-faced Bear again…).

The rodents eat the bait, stagger out of the building looking for water, and are easy prey for whatever carnivore happens to be passing by, be it wildlife or someone’s pet. A poisoned rodent can kill whatever eats it, and death by poison is a very bad way to go. Need an example of “hypocrisy?”

You will know that bird died from applied pesticides, or see the owl that was hit by a car and realize this was a human-caused consequence.

Other areas of New York City where the parakeets were seen in 1970 included the upper East side of Manhattan, Great Kills, Staten Island, Ellis Island and the area around the Statue of Liberty. But it is most probable that the birds are released or escaped pets. There are a lot of pet psittacines out there that escape or are released.
