A winding track through dense woodlands takes us to the Telia Lake in the southeast of the Tadoba Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. Our guide explains that it was discovered by tiger cubs and taken off to play with, hence the claw and tooth marks. All of a sudden, in a hushed voice he says one word only: “Tigers!”

One year we found an impressively big calidus Peregrine, feeding on a Wigeon that it had killed. A Kerkini mini-tiger Disappointingly, mammal encounters are few, other than the odd Roe Deer. Kerkini’s most famous mammal is the domesticated Water Buffalo – large herds are kept around the lake.

Most gallingly of all, I had actually stood next to someone that saw one, jumping into a tree to escape a Tiger of all things, and failed to see it. The other three were the aforementioned Tiger, one of the wildlife sightings of my life, a handful of Bobcats I have seen in California and a small Jungle Cat. I’ll wait).

A paper reports on how a female Common Cuckoo was mobbed and killed by Oriental Reed Warbler hosts. The rather elegant-looking Tiger Shrike also mostly feeds on insects but was not kind enough to let me take a video or photo of this (the species thinks that such recordings may result in a negative public image).

As visitors’ and the public’s interests expanded from the Big Five, and an appreciation for lesser mammals, birds and smaller wildlife has became more widespread, the term Little Five was coined.

This is the genus of the typical large cats including Lion, Leopard, Jaguar and Tiger. In fact genetic evidence indicates that the Snow Leopard’s closest living relative is the Tiger. The red line follows the chase with the yellow dot indicating the first failed attack and the red dot being the final kill position.

As she continued her monologue about these cats, the Wildcat cautiously walked in our direction, never taking its eyes off of us, stiff-legged, ears motionless, striped like a standard “tiger” domestic cat but entirely in grays. He also had tigers, cougars, and some other animals. We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.4–3.7
