Call me old fashioned if you like, but I rather like many of these old names, as they put a bit of colour and interest into birding, especially if you bother to investigate who exactly the birds are named after. There are many who think that the whole idea is ridiculous, while others believe that it is long overdue.

KING-TV reports that both the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the deaths. The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound.

Before I go further I should, of course, introduce my two teammates who suffered with me the torments of hours on bicycle seats and hard plastic kayaks. A stop at Hidden Valley netted us several species, including our only Scarlet Tanager of the day as well as a surprise fly-by adult Bald Eagle. They were close to shore and awesome.

They belong to the canine species Nyctereutes procyonoides.
