The idea of Lost Animals was conceived after the publication of Extinct Birds (2001), a 400-page, four-pound book on 75 extinct species. Lost Birds looks at photographic representations of 28 species, 21 of which are birds. Some were taken of birds and mammals in zoos or aviaries, others were taken in the wild, often in remote places.

The Osprey tries another hunt, finally a successful one, while Telia goes deeper into the water and lies down. In a news report from 2009, the DNA quoted a senior Forest Department official who feared that the poachers must have killed around 20 tigers in the region in just five months. The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. Little boys kill thousands of birds each year with slingshots. The introduction of exotic animals has extirpated and continues to threaten hundreds of species. What can we do while species disappear from the planet each year?

It’s a small education Northern White-faced Owl that completely changes shape as zoo keepers bring by other types of owls that would be a predator for that species. All an owl knows is that when they stare at something, they’re trying to figure out if they can kill and eat it. We love those eyes.

Africa has more than its fair share of storks, with 8 of the world’s 19 species gracing the continent. Storks are typically viewed as wetland species and whilst some storks are restricted to aquatic habitats, others are not. They have even been known to kill children who have been incautious enough to approach too closely.

The Gray Crowned-Crane is a new addition to the list of the world’s Endangered species, creeping up a category from Vulnerable.
