The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). And it does not even live in reeds.

Agonizing quandaries concerning invasive species are well-known to wildlife biologists. In Oregon, the Barred Owl is taking over Northern Spotted Owl territory and threatening that smaller bird’s survival. And keeping cats, natural hunters, indoors is, as a matter of biology and of common sense, not the healthiest state for them.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. Note in this 2010 video, birders, birdwatching and kayakers are mentioned, not hunters. This is an Urban Refuge ! Why would you open it up to hunting?

The first weekend had me visiting my hometown of Lakeview Oregon, and the many different areas that I ran around in as a kid. The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species.
