Altruism, Albatrosses, and Vicious Young Men

10,000 Birds

The three young men returned to their friends, bragged about their exploits, and showed them trophies: metal banding tags, which members of the Pacific Rim Conservation had carefully placed on the albatrosses’ legs in order to keep track of individual birds. The young men had severed the birds’ legs in order to remove the tags.

On SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer

"environmentalists" would have to value the life of an Atlantic salmon more than the life of a human because, in environmental terms, there are too few Atlantic salmons and far too many humans. To old-speciesists, nonhumans must justify their existence by proving useful to humans; in contrast, some or all humans have inherent value.

Like when they're about to be, say, slaughtered? Here's what I see: Once again, as with attempts to convince the public that animal farming could ever be humane , humans are desperate to provide alternatives to consuming animals that don't include not consuming animals. On Coping Mechanisms

Abby, I too get very upset by stories and images of what occurs every second of every day to nonhumans and humans alike. The suffering in this world that occurs at the hand of humankind and is entirely intentional, is disgusting and dispiriting. I choose not to watch videos or bombard myself with images of suffering.
