That's what Michigan's State Department of Natural Resources says. Michigan's removal of the bald eagle and gray wolf from the list will be the most significant change in species protection the state has seen in years. Killing would be permitted only if a wolf posed a direct threat to humans.

In addition to spotting exciting new species in Florida, including the rare Snail Kite, travel across the country brought me into contact with birds in Oregon, California, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alabama, and more. With my new job, I feel privileged to work towards protecting vulnerable species each and very day.

What do you say when someone tells you they will be spending the summer in the Lower Michigan Peninsula? Recently it has also been documented as breeding in Wisconsin, Ontario, and the Upper Michigan Peninsula, but those birds are few and not always accessible. The bold gray-and-white birds know what humans are good for and that is as a source of food! They are also found in the mountainous interior west as far south as Arizona and New Mexico, as well as in the far northern reaches of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and New England.
