Sometimes, you gotta travel to find the breaks in the rain but when you do, the toucans are calling, and parrots, raptors, and other large birds are trying to dry out in the treetops. Each year, I hope to identify at least 600 species. In checking my list, I find that I am missing at least 6 species that I usually have by now.

We might not get the variety of a New Jersey autumn but we do get major numbers of species that winter in South America. However, this year, we opted for a site that could also give a chance at Great Jacamar and a few other key resident species in addition to migrants. We saw them do their butterfly flight over the tree tops every day.

From there, we entered a side tributary full of Ringed and Amazon Kingfishers , with Chestnut-fronted and Scarlet Macaws in flight… and then the noise: groans, croaks and grunts… and the smell… of this 65 million years old species, so old that the last dinosaurs must have fed on them!

I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. Once I find a few active species I watch and wait. This particular tree has been excellent for a variety of bird species including Eastern Spinebills. Pacific Black Ducks. Tiger Snake. White-throated Treecreeper.

The hollowed-out bones connected to the lungs for respiration that we see today as a key bird adaptation to the aerobically challenging behavior of flight existed in many dinosaurs that were as far way from being bird-like as, well, as a T-rex is from being your pet parrot. This requires a few things to be true, depending on the fossils.

Then in the morning they would bucket the water onto the granite with the use of horses and the granite would explode in layers. We had hoped to encounter this species on our trip and although it was not the first encounter we did get much better views of the pair of birds than we had at Niagara Dam near Kookynie a few days earlier.
