We've written about the Calgary Zoo here before. To many people, the number of animal fatalities at the Calgary Zoo in newer years seemed very high. A hippo passed away following a long, horrible transfer from another zoo. A huge spiral-horned goat got trapped in a toy rope and choked. Not a stellar reputation.

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. In May 2008, 41 of the 43 rays at the Calgary Zoo’s 37,000-litre touch-tank died.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. But hedgehogs? Greenfinches?

Gisela Kaplan has written a book about the species, and how they seem unperturbed by humans: “It’s one of their most successful defense strategies. It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. They just sit and pretend not to be there to avoid interaction.” Just please do not return to this website afterward.

Greater Rheas, a species the Germans call Nandu, are very popular in Germany and frequently kept in zoos as well as private enclosures. It is not unusual to drive by a farm building and see a bunch of Greater Rheas on the farm’s fenced-in pasture next to sheep or goats. Clearly, the birds had to be removed, the sooner the better.

The stunning head plumes of the Gray Crowned-Crane make it attractive to bird collectors and zoos; illegal collecting of wild birds is one of the reasons why this species is now considered Endangered. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.

As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. Strangely, the photo accompanying the Wikipedia entry on Collared Finchbills , Asian birds, was taken at Cincinnati zoo. One of the established ways to evaluate self-cognition in animals (including humans) is the mirror test.
