After several game drives, once again we are at the front gate of the Gir National Park in the state of Gujarat. We have almost forgotten that Manoj has promised us some creatures of the night, when he raised his hand to point at three Mottled Wood Owls right above us (cover photo), beautiful large Strix owls slightly amused by us.

Photos courtesy of Mosetlha Bush Camp A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. They raise their trunks, sniffing the air.

GAMES AND APPS. What kid does not love games? Thankfully there are several really excellent family board games that you can play as a whole family. A few to try out are as follows: The Great North American Birdwatching Trivia Board Game and Bird-opoly. My youngest and a Burrowing Owl 8. BIRD FEEDERS.

Ndumo Game Reserve lies in the Easternmost part of South Africa, close to the border of Mozambique and Eswatini. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them.

But I’m not talking about owling, or listening for rails, or even pointing a microphone skyward to collect flight calls of migrants. Which these days involves a frenzy to breed and raise a brood. He told me where he’d found them, and we hung up and I went back to my card game.

Most of the collective nouns would have been used to describe animals that were hunted for sport which is disturbing when one considers a Parliament of Owls for example, a Herd of Wrens or a Stand of Flamingos. Looking over some of the lists raises a few questions. I wonder if a Sussuration has been taken yet.
