The species is listed as Vulnerable – the estimated number of individuals is 4600-5100 (HBW), of which about 2000 winter on Hokkaido. Georg Wilhelm Steller (1709 – 1746) was a German-born naturalist, though it seems he spent most of his (shortish) adult life in Russia, participating in the exploration of the North Pacific region.

As Marra and Santella note, tens of millions of people have “a deep bond and connection with cats” precisely because they’re a little bit wild, among a multitude of other reasons including soft fur, cuddliness, and playfulness.

The species was extinct, a vanished part of the vanishing prairie — and not for the first time. John Bachmann headed west to gather material for Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Somewhere around the Platte River one of the Audubon boys received a black-footed hide from a fur trader. You couldn’t see it.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.

But, I did take many photos, and used the book, in spurts during the trip and more closely afterward, to identify three seabird species, two expected (Sooty and Black-vented Shearwaters) and one a surprise. It does not include near-shore, coastal species, like Brown Pelican, Elegant Tern, and Harbor Seal.
