Above, Snow Geese approach the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Below, Common Cranes soar over Chateau Chenonceau in France. The result appears to be a chance to birdwatch as you never have before—namely, from the perspective of fellow birds. How cool is that? She has lived in Maine, California, France, New York, and currently makes her home in Washington, DC. The Grebes were gone, but present were the ever ubiquitous Canada Geese. More impressive in flight than the geese however, was a lone Osprey , dangling a fish from its talons! Weather is weird.

Most of them based in a single attractive, historic, and easily walkable city or town, my tours, under VENT’s Birds, Nature, and Culture rubric, always see plenty of birds: hoopoes and rollers in France, Great Bustards and bean geese in Germany, Fulvous Owls and Black-capped Swallows in Guatemala are just a few examples.

Visiting the continent after the end of most of the autumn migration meant that the number of bird species I could see in northern France, Switzerland, southern Germany, and Austria was much reduced. Munich’s Englischer Garten is known to host several east-Asian Bar-headed Geese. Only a pair of Mandarin Ducks !

Ducks, swans, and geese may initially appear easy to identify. And, it is a guide based on scholarship as well as field work (author Reeber has monitored the birds of the Lac of Grand-Lieu, France, for the National Society for Nature Protection (SNPN) since 1994). Or, a Tufted Duck or Cackling Goose.

The Lesser White-fronted Goose is not only rare in Serbia, but also overlooked among numerous Greater White-fronted Geese. Hunting is also significant during migration and in its wintering range; with an annual toll in France computed at c. point to just one problem source, one over-abundant and highly invasive species – Homo sapiens.

Here’s a tidbit from the NRA’s Hunters’ Rights website: “Sandhill cranes are hunted much like geese, with decoys set in fields and hunters stationed in blinds. Canada Geese and Crows can figure it out, so can Cranes. Do away with hunters and allow If you want less hunting in your culture, I suggest France.
