Birding in the Blossoms

She has lived in Maine, California, France, New York, and currently makes her home in Washington, DC. The Grebes were gone, but present were the ever ubiquitous Canada Geese. More impressive in flight than the geese however, was a lone Osprey , dangling a fish from its talons! Weather is weird.

Old World waterfowl… and other waterfowl in the Old World

Visiting the continent after the end of most of the autumn migration meant that the number of bird species I could see in northern France, Switzerland, southern Germany, and Austria was much reduced. Munich’s Englischer Garten is known to host several east-Asian Bar-headed Geese. Only a pair of Mandarin Ducks !

The Lesser White-fronted Goose is not only rare in Serbia, but also overlooked among numerous Greater White-fronted Geese. Hunting is also significant during migration and in its wintering range; with an annual toll in France computed at c. point to just one problem source, one over-abundant and highly invasive species – Homo sapiens.

Here’s a tidbit from the NRA’s Hunters’ Rights website: “Sandhill cranes are hunted much like geese, with decoys set in fields and hunters stationed in blinds. Canada Geese and Crows can figure it out, so can Cranes. Do away with hunters and allow If you want less hunting in your culture, I suggest France.
