It has no avian endemic species (only one subspecies), and its most spectacular birds like Venezuelan Troupial and Fiery-Topaz Hummingbird can be found in greater numbers across a narrow strait in mainland South America, where you can pick up an additional 400-500 species besides. Air boats are not my first choice for aquatic transportation – being loud and generally disturbing to everyone and everything – but they did allow us to cover a lot of water very quickly. I not only appreciated the diversity of species, but also just how many birds there were. Egrets in the distance.

In total, there are eight species of hornbills in Borneo – the best place to see them seems to be the Kinabatagan River area (also known as Sukau). Another paper reviews information on Oriental Pied Hornbills raiding the nests of various bird species in Singapore and even pet bird cages.
