Now we were in Finca Tres Equis, a family cocoa farm (if I understood well, it translates as Triple X Farm) and a private reserve of over 300 hectares, of which more than 70 percent is a forest, representing part of a Jaguar corridor. It was a sigh of relief when I discovered that my species #1000 became a Short-tailed Hawk.

They have been pretty frustrated with China, who really doesn't give a rip about tigers.unless they can raise them on farms for "medicinal" harvest and other capitalist pursuits. Tags: India poaching tigers china endangered species.

A Tiger Shrike – as always – looks very stylish. Little Curlews are passing through Shanghai for a short time, taking the local sod farm as a surrogate for tundra. A cuckoo species with a sense of honor, being a non-parasitic cuckoo. A Grey Night Jar does what it does best – being almost invisible.

The prospect of identifying a certain number of species in a given amount of time pushes us to pay more attention to birds no matter what the circumstances (although I suggest keeping the exclamations about species identifications to yourself during such solemn situations as funerals, graduations, and watching episodes of The Sopranos).

Little Egret: There is a shrimp farm by the seaside. Tiger Shrike. Cuckoo species (common?): Little Grebe: With 4 chicks waiting for the fish, maybe better to eat it yourself … Some birds seem to prefer crustaceans. Black-capped Kingfisher. Very easy work. Cattle Egret. Brown Shrike. Black-winged Cuckoo Shrike.

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Great White Pelican is not just the name of a non-existent glam-rock band but also of a bird species. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? UysI and G.

The house is on a working farm, in the far back end of a large mountain valley and tremendous. We did get introduced to Geiner Huertas Reyes, who took us for a walk along part of the river and into a public park, where we put together a nice list of 61 species. Costa Rica certainly has a few birds with some amazingly long names.
