Altruism, Albatrosses, and Vicious Young Men

10,000 Birds

My objection is: Why do such research when you don't need to? Like when they're about to be, say, slaughtered? What about being torn from your family? Not to mention the reality that there is so much more involved in being bred for slaughter than pain, and none of that is addressed. This is where I'm confused.

He is against it for himself and his family. The Nimans move him, as do several other farmers, including one who "apologizes to his animals as they are sent off to slaughter" (244), as if that's any consolation to someone whose life you are about to take when you don't need to.
