There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

I am reminded of the ducks’ perilous and arduous existence on each family outing to Heidelberg Zoo. The Duck Pond of Heidelberg Zoo with camp Crystal Lake in the background Little did Woody realize he was being watched – from below. And I am forced to face my fears once more. All is peaceful, all is quiet.

Intriguingly, Common Moorhens are also rather common in Germany’s large ornamental city parks and zoos. I am not referring to the one incident when two Carrion Crows at Basel Zoo suddenly descended on a grazing Common Moorhen and ripped it apart for no apparent other reason than joyful play. Beware of Crocodiles.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills.

Sea lion mothers wail when watching their babies being eaten by killer whales. Chimpanzees and elephants grieve the loss of family and friends, and gorillas hold wakes for the dead. Donna Fernandes, president of the Buffalo Zoo, witnessed a wake for a female gorilla, Babs, who had died of cancer at Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo.

Dogs are likely to be true-born wet-nurses; in particular, it is related to whelp dogs, which are often used as step-mothers for young predators in the Zoos. This case has strongly fascinated the publicity, which led to publishing the book about this awkward family – Tiger-Pups.

But while that holiday has come and gone, 2018 remains the bicentennial year of the first export of Guinness to the United States, an anniversary the brewery is commemorating with a special release of Guinness Draught in cans decorated with its famous Guinness “Zoo” advertising art from the 1930s. They thought it would be vulgar.
