Two baby orang-utans and a lion cub have become the latest victims of China's contaminated milk crisis. The animals, at at Hangzhou Zoo near Shanghai, developed kidney stones after being fed milk powder tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. Apparently, tainted Chinese milk is sickening animals as well.

Well, Copenhagen Zoo is back in the news; a few weeks after killing a giraffe and feeding it to some lions, it went and killed some of those same lions. I’m not gong to go into the ethics and reasons behind why a zoo might want to, well, manage its stock. Losing a few non-breeding lions in zoos a great deal less.

Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills. Due to disturbance by fishermen, habitat destruction and nest robbing for zoos and bird collections, the Shoebill is now classified as vulnerable.

Donna Fernandes, president of the Buffalo Zoo, witnessed a wake for a female gorilla, Babs, who had died of cancer at Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo. If she’d been left alone, she would have fallen prey to a lion or other predator.

Perhaps it would be better to move the tigers to that bigger reserve, or maybe a zoo. In exchange for a handful of wildebeest, oryx, impala, buffalo and kudu, not to mention the occasional lion, enormous areas of wilderness and all the species they contain are set aside and protected.
